During the upcoming holiday season Hearth Hospice is seeking to fill even more volunteer positions. Hearth Hospice is the only hospice based in Chattooga County and they are currently seeking volunteers. This is a great opportunity for high school students looking to stack up volunteer hours, college students seeking field experience or older people who just want to give back to the community.
It takes a special kind of person to be a hospice volunteer. Hospice volunteers do the kind of things a good friend might do to bring comfort. Most likely the, the kinds of things you’ve already done for someone.
Who are Hearth’s volunteers?
The volunteers are the unsung heroes of Hearth. They see firsthand the many stresses our patients and families go through and strive to give a sense of normalcy back to their lives. They are dependable, patient, emotionally mature and respectful of people’s beliefs and backgrounds. Volunteers are an integral part of team and work closely with the doctors, nurses, aides, chaplains, and social workers to provide the best quality of life possible.
What do volunteers do?
Volunteers provide companionship and support to the patients and their families. They may help by running errands, helping with household chores, or just lending a listening ear. Volunteers may also provide their expertise in community outreach, office work, and other operational tasks. Volunteers are given a choice of how much and what type of things they want to do.
Are volunteers trained?
Yes, Hearth will provide free and comprehensive training for volunteers before they are assigned any tasks. Volunteers will learn about the hospice philosophy, grief education, health & safety precautions and more. Volunteers are trained at their convenience. Volunteers must submit to drug and background screening.
There are no specific time requirements for how much a volunteer has to work. Typically volunteers may serve two or three hours a week. While the Hearth Office is based out of Summerville they do service many more areas.
