Back in my newspaper days, I used to do this little exercise I am about to do again today.
I would always predict Georgia’s upcoming football season game-by-game.
I haven’t done this in several years, and had I done it last year, I would not have had Georgia winning the SEC, making the College Football Playoff and playing for the national championship.
That came as a surprise, but this year it would not, of course.
This year, some are forecasting all those things to happen again, but others are saying the Bulldogs won’t actually win the SEC, yet they still get a shot at the national crown by getting a playoff berth like Alabama last year.
Could happen, yes.
What do I think? Well, for what it’s worth, let’s go to the schedule and see.
This Saturday vs. Austin Peay – I like the nickname the visitors will bring to Athens, but the Governors take a beating and a big paycheck back to Tennessee. Jake Fromm’s Team 55, Them 20.
Sept. 8 at South Carolina: The Gamecocks are a popular pick to upset the Bulldogs here because past history between these teams in early September games says it will be close. The Roosters might crow loudly at times, but the Dogs have too much bark. Dawgs 30, Chickens 23.
Sept. 15 vs. Middle Tennessee State: Why is this one at night? Party all afternoon Bulldog Nation, and well past midnight, too. UGA 45, Blue Raiders 17.
Sept. 22 at Missouri: Yeah, Mizzou might score, but Georgia scores more. Dogs 41, Tigers 30.
Sept. 29 vs. Tennessee: Jeremy Pruitt didn’t respect Mark Richt, so Aaron Murray says. Well, this is Kirby’s team now. And ain’t no Hail Mary gonna save the Volunteers this time. Smart 44, Rookie HC 23.
Oct. 6 vs. Vanderbilt: Lol. UGA 47, Vandy 16.
Oct. 13 at LSU: Will this be 3:30 or 7:30? Tigers might want to hope for a night game. Bulldogs 27, Bayou Bengals 17.
Oct. 27 vs. Florida: How will the Gators spin this one next summer at SEC Media Days? Red and Black 33, Orange and Blue 20.
Nov. 3 at Kentucky: I think the Wildcats will be good enough to keep their fans interested in pigskin until the end of the season, but UK does play Duke in roundball three days after this one. Thank U Mark Fox 36, One-and-Done U 19.
Nov. 10 vs. Auburn: Just when you thought Georgia was going undefeated …. War Eagles 27, Bulldawgs 24.
Nov. 17 vs. UMass: A flat Georgia team is better any day than the Minutemen on their best day. UGA 45, UMass 20.
Nov. 24 vs. Georgia Tech: It’s possible Fish Fry Johnson has bigger fish to fry the following week in the ACC championship game and a rematch against Clemson, but who runs this state? That’s right. Sanford Drive Kennel 36, North Avenue Bee Hive 20.
So there you have it. Georgia goes 11-1.
The Bulldogs win the SEC East. This year, they get Alabama in the SEC title game, and Tua Tagovailoa beats them again.
That one is also for the SEC’s only spot in the playoff, so Bama gets that, too. The other playoff teams are Clemson, Penn State/Ohio State/Wisconsin/Michigan (call it the Nittany Lions) and Washington.
Georgia goes to a New Year’s Six Bowl, and let’s say it’s the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State and Urban Meyer.
And oh, Georgia wins with a entire nation singing in unison, “Glory, glory to old Georgia … and to Hell with Urban Meyer!!!!”
