This Op-Ed column was written by Republican Congressman Buddy Carter who is seeking re-election. Carter represents Georgia’s First Congressional District which makes up the entire region of coastal Georgia, and the areas encompassing Alma, Blackshear, Folkston, Homerville, Jesup, Waycross, and portions of Valdosta. Carter is from Pooler, GA and is registered pharmacist who owns and operates pharmacies in his community for over 30 years. These are the opinions of the author and not those of AllOnGeorgia.
I was born and raised here in the First District of Georgia. My wife Amy was also born and raised here in Waycross. We raised our family here and we will continue to live the rest of our lives here. I have dedicated my life to serving our community, whether in elected office or behind the pharmacy counter.
Now, I have the great honor and privilege of representing our home in Congress.
I have fought for tax cuts so you can keep more of your hard-earned money for your family, more affordable and accessible health care, and policies that spur job creation and support our booming economy.
I also work every day to address specific issues important to Southeast Georgia. This includes everything from disaster relief to local grants to supporting our military bases and ports.
Over the past few years, Southeast Georgia has been impacted by hard-hitting storms. I have been committed to not only working to help pick up the pieces, but to ensure we are better prepared for the future. This includes working with multiple counties, local officials, and community members to coordinate disaster relief efforts with Governor Deal’s office and with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). We must ensure the resources are available to help rebuild in communities that are hit the hardest like Saint Marys. I am committed to always making sure we are able to bounce back stronger than before.
Our military bases not only represent an integral part of our community, but they represent our region’s commitment to national security. Specifically, the submarines at Kings Bay play a critical role in our nuclear deterrence as the United States continues to face uncertain threats from around the globe. Kings Bay is the elite home to the Atlantic ballistic submarine fleet and I am fighting in Congress to do everything in my power to make sure this continues by supporting future missions.
My role on the Energy and Commerce Committee has allowed me to bring our concerns regarding the Terry Creek Superfund site and other issues directly to the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This has been critical as we work to ensure the local community is able to redevelop the site without contaminated materials.
I continue to work on issues that impact hardworking shrimpers, an industry that is very important to our area. When disaster hit the coast and nearly sank an industry that has had a home in McIntosh County for generations, I stepped in to make sure the federal government’s efforts included Georgia.
Finally, we are fortunate to have the number one port for new auto imports in Brunswick. One of my most important jobs in Congress is ensuring the port receives the federal support it needs. I have also been vocal about my opposition to any trade remedies that could be harmful to the impressive business going on at the port.
Serving my home in Congress is one of the greatest honors of my life. I will continue fighting for our shared priorities in Washington. First District values will always come first.
